WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT USING A LEGAL RECRUITER

Changing jobs represents a momentous occasion in your life. If you are contemplating contacting a legal recruiter, it is important to know with whom you are dealing and what to expect of your recruiter. At
MILLERBLOWERS, we believe that finding the right match for our candidates and clients is far more important than earning a search fee. We hope to build a lifetime relationship with you, and to that end, we'll give you the best we have to offer - honesty and integrity and the benefit of our 27+ years of experience serving the legal community.

BEFORE CALLING A SEARCH FIRM CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING

Research the background of the search firm. Ask how long the company has been in business and why they are qualified to assist you. If you know someone who is familiar with search firms in the geographic area in which you are interested, get their advice. Have they spoken with this search firm? Were they treated with courtesy - even if the search firm wasn’t able to help them? What is their reputation in the community? Find out the usual geographic area covered by the search firm. Generally speaking, a search firm in Chicago will not be as helpful to you in your search for a position in Florida, as they do not know the local market, nor do they have strong contacts with prospective employers.

ASK SEARCH FIRMS HOW THEY OPERATE

Do they use the shotgun approach? That is, do they submit your resume to all of their clients without knowing whether or not they are currently looking for someone with your background?

Insist that the recruiter understand that your resume is not to be sent anywhere without your explicit permission. It does not reflect well on you if your resume is sent to the same employer by more than one search firm.

Insist that the search firm provides as much information as possible about every prospective employer.

ASK THE SEARCH FIRM FOR A CANDID EVALUATION OF THEIR ABILITY TO HELP YOU

When you speak with a search firm consultant, they should give you a candid evaluation of whether or not they are likely to be able to help you. While there are always exceptions, in most instances the following candidates are the most likely prospects for placement through a search firm:
  • Associates and partners with expertise in a particular area of the law. Generally speaking, it is more difficult to help attorneys who have switched from one specialty to another.

  • At the partner level, a portable book of business is usually required. In some instances, however, a particular expertise is needed to replace a partner or to service an existing client’s needs.

  • Academics. Again, there are exceptions, but most clients have the
expectation that a search firm will provide candidates with exceptional work experience and academic backgrounds.
